Do We Really Swallow Twelve Spiders a Year?

Claim: You swallow about 8-12 spiders in your sleep every year.

Rating: FALSE

Explanation:

Spiders are not actually attracted to your mouth. They will avoid warm, noisy places, and even if one got in your mouth you would almost certainly not swallow.

"The myth flies in the face of both spider and human biology, which makes it highly unlikely that a spider would ever end up in your mouth." —Scientific American says.

Rod Crawford, spider expert, said in an interview with Mental Floss:

“A totally normal, neatly made bed has maybe one or two spiders cross it per year.”

“Just try blowing on a spider and see how they react to that! It’s not attractive to them!”

This is just another spider myth. There's no evidence for it.
