In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Extended Edition), the armies of the Elves and Dwarves face off. Dain, leader of the Dwarves, and Thranduil, king of the Elves, exchange insults, and finally Dain says, "Right, then. Let's get this done. Send in the goats!"
Several hundred Dwarves on giant rams charge through lanes in the Dwarven ranks. Thranduil orders the Elves to fire their longbows, and a massive volley of arrows flies toward the goat-riders.
"Burak Khazad!" Dain shouts, and several large, bladed, spinning projectiles fly over the Dwarves and cut the Elven volley to shreds, then land in the Elven ranks, killing dozens of Elves. "Hey! How do you like the old Twirly Whirlies? Ha ha, you buggers!" Dain yells.
The goats-riders are almost to the Elves. Thranduil orders another volley. This, too, is diverted by the giant bolts, now seen to come from nine huge ballistae behind the Dwarven army. The goats crash into the Elves, and the battle begins.
I wanted to make a LEGO Twirly Whirly to see if it was possible. I decided on several requirements:
The bolts should actually spin.
The ballista must have a range of at least five feet.
No motors allowed.
Well, I did it. It spins, has a range of ten feet, and does not use motors.
